Introduction
The Department of English began teaching General courses from 1931 and the Honours course from 1953. Since the college came under the aegis of the University of Burdwan in 1961, the Department has been following the university prescribed syllabus for Under-Graduate courses.
Currently the teaching faculty comprises 2 Associate Professors and 3 Assistant Professors. The department has a rich seminar library for aiding the students and provides various other modes of exposure and opportunities of additional learning to students for their holistic development and greater intellectual enhancement. It also has a book bank which provides text and reference books to students.
The Department organizes Monthly Lectures by eminent scholars from the country and abroad. It has also organized a two-days international conference in 2016 which had a number of paper-presenters from the country and the world and was attended by a large number of scholars and professors.
Over the last few years, the department has also organised several online and offline student enrichment programmes involving faculty members from West Bengal, other part of India and also international faculty members such as Dr. Claire Chambers from the University of York, UK or Dr. Esha Sil from the University of Helsinki, Finland. The faculty members of the department are also actively involved in the editorial management of the college journal Trivium.
