Sections of the Museum
The museum is divided into five rooms with their own specific thematic focus.
The First Room contains information displaying a brief trajectory of the city's evolution. They are accompanied by a series of
photographs which detail the journey of the city from its earliest beginnings to its present state, the architectural heritage of
the city, including monuments declared as heritage properties by the West Bengal Heritage Commission, as well as historical sites
that have now become extinct. The photographs depict both certain invariant features of the city as well as changes across time.
The illustrations in this room also portray the relationships of different luminaries of Bengal with the city of Chandernagore.
The Second Room pays homage to the memory of the revolutionaries like I€anailal Datta, Makhanlal Ghoshal, Motilal Roy and
several others who were imprisoned or executed through a combination of displays, installations, photographs, sculptures and
ceramic relief work of the revolutionaries.
Room Three acts as a repository of archival documents which showcase the diverse aspects of revolutionary activities emanating
from Chandernagore.
Room Four hosts a traditional loom and weaving machine related with the extinct art of weaving associated with Forashdanga.
There are also illustrations of Chandernagore’s socio-cultuialhistoty and the indigenous traditions of physical exercises
and combat sports which had flourished in Chandernagore, in defiance of colonial stereotypes of sedentary lifestyle and
effeminacy.Since the revolutionaries often used boats to ferry their arms and ammunitions, this room also contains a
smalllocally made wooden boat, generahy used by fishermen.
The Fifth Room focuses on archival references to the present Chandernagore College, consisting of the twenty-three years
long closure of the College Dupleix and Shri Charu Chandra Roy, erstwhile Deputy Director of the college. The expansion
and evolution of Chandernagore College from the erstwhile College Dupleix is also conceptualised in this room.
