Chandernagore College established in 1862 by the French Colonial Government as a French Primary School - “Ecole de Sainte Marie”, and finally re-established in its present form in 2nd October 1954, has a long and chequered history. Previously known as College Dupleix, Chandernagore College, has been witness to the changing courses of history. It has striven to contribute to the academic enhancement of not only the urban residents of Chandernagore but also of its rural surrounding regions. Chandernagore College is a premier educational institution which has made consistent progress year by year in academic and co-curricular activities. The College now boasts of nineteen undergraduate departments and three post-graduate departments, consisting of both young and experienced faculty members who are actively involved in teaching and research. One unique feature of this College is that it is one of the few places in West Bengal where French is taught at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels. Increasing number of students have been seeking admission to the College each year and the institution, in accordance with governmental norms, has been catering to a wide cross-section of society. Students from economically backward sections of the society are also provided with mainly government scholarships to ensure their successful academic pursuits. Students also get to enjoy the resources of a rich library which houses hundreds of rare books, including the collection donated by Late Harihar Seth, many of which are particularly relevant for research on the French Heritage of Chandernagore - a fact that has been internationally acknowledged. However, the College is well aware of the fact that preserving heritage must go hand in hand with meeting the challenges of the present and future. Infrastructural development and academic enrichment processes are therefore continuing in order to fulfil these aims and objectives. We mentor our students to respect the ideals of democracy and secularism, to become free thinkers and to become honest and responsible citizens of the country. We believe in progress through leadership and appropriate governance for the holistic development of its students. The College while proud of its past, is marching ahead to achieve excellence.
