Introduction
This department started its journey in 1931 as the Department of Civics. In 1947, it undertook the teaching of Economics as a separate discipline in Pass course. In 1948, Honours course was offered to the students. Many eminent teachers have taught in this department in recent past. Prof. Ashis Kr. Dasgupta, former Professor of Economics, Presidency College and former member of Public Service Commission, Prof. Amitava Chatterjee, Head of the Department of Economics, Presidency College and Prof. Ambar Ghosh, Professor of Economics, Jadavpur University are worth mentioning. Many students have left their mark in professional world after securing their Graduation degree from this department.
