The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Central Sector Scheme of Government of India, under Ministry
of Youth Affairs and Sports. This scheme was launched in Mahatma Gandhi's Centenary year, i.e. 1969
and aimed at developing student's personality through community service, with its motto being
"NOT ME BUT YOU". Since inception of the NSS in the year 1969, the number of students strength
increased from 40,000 to over 3.8 million pan India up to the end of March 2018 NSS is a voluntary
association of young people in Colleges and Universities were volunteers are provided with hands on
experiencein various government led community service activities. Volunteers are trained with the
vision of nurturing future citizens not only as accomplished social leader, efficient administrator
but also a person who understands human nature.
