Introduction
Teaching of Philosophy in this college dates back to 1931 with Sri Surendranath Goswami, Professor of Logic at the
helm. Under the University of Calcutta I.A and I.S.C Courses were offered by the college till 1947 when General courses in
different disciplines were introduced. After the retirement of Professor Goswami, Dr. Pramod Ranjan Bhar adorned the chair
and Professor Naresh Chandra Chakravorty shared the responsibility with him as his deputy. With the able and successful imparting of the levels of modern philosophic movements of the West and the East, they earned reputation among the vast number of students.After the retirement of Dr. Bhar in 1968, Dr. Kamalesh Bannerjee took over the charge of the department. Professor Manomohan Chakravorty (student of Dr. Sarvapally Radhakrishnan) came to the department to shoulder the responsibility in 1963.With the establishment of the University of Burdwan in 1961, the Department of Philosophy flourished with Honours
